The
Effects of Bullying
Introduction
Since my grandparents were youngsters,
bullying has been a continuing problem in our society. Bullies begin their
lives as victims of bullying at the hands of another person. It gives them a
sense of control when they may believe they do not have it in other areas of
their lives. The fact of the matter is that bullying can harm all parties
involved, along with the bullies themselves(Yen et
al., 2014). Both the perpetrator and the victim have the potential to be
expelled from school, which will inevitably harm the rest of their careers.
Because of the damage done to the victim's sense of self-worth can drive them
to sink into a depression that is severe enough for them to consider ending
their own lives or inflicting injury on themselves.
Especially as they mature, they could
still have issues with their self-esteem. As a result, they may experience
difficulties in their personal and professional lives in the future, directly
resulting from their anxiety in social situations. The impacts that bullying
has on people have not evolved. It is just as bad as it has been in the past,
and the issue is not getting any better. Because we live in an era of the
internet, where offenders can shelter behind a screen and stay anonymous,
bullying has recently been rising (Lee & Shin,
2021). Because both the offender and the vulnerable are slowly improving
at concealing what is happening, we need to regulate the amount of screen time
youngsters get. Being a bully or being on the receiving end of bullying can
have various negative impacts, including feelings of sadness and low
self-esteem, lower than average body mass indexes, and increased levels of
social anxiety.
Depression
The bully and the bullied might
experience mental health problems due tovarious forms of bullying, including
disorders like anxiety and despair. The study indicated that being bullied
during extremely early adolescence was connected to depressed mood in
adulthood, particularly in those who claimed being tormented regularly or those
who experienced being tortured at the ages of 16 and 18. If the bullying
happens, children may adjust their conduct, such as keeping quiet with their
peers or mingling with other people. Self-inflicted injuries and suicidal
thoughts are severe public health issues for adolescents worldwide, including
Australia. As an illustration, the rate of suicide attempts among those aged 10
to 24 increased by 56 percent between 2008 and 2017, and suicide now ranks as
the country's second top cause of mortality for this age bracket(Islam et al., 2022). According to the most recent
population statistics, girls are more prone than boys to be the targets of
bullying, to feel depressed and anxious, inflict self-harm on themselves, and
take their own lives. Self-injury and thoughts of ending one's own life are
common among those suffering from significant depression, which is true for
both genders.
Low
self-esteem and low body mass index
Another effect of bullying is that it
can cause victims to have low self-esteem and body mass indexes. The outcomes
of this study indicated that experiences of being teased about one's weight or
shape and feelings of discontent with one's weight gain are linked with
disordered eating behaviors and perceptions among middle school girls. When a youngster
is bullied, it may have a terrible effect on their self-esteem, even decades
after the bullying has stopped(Lee & Shin,
2021). Even if a youngster is bullied only once in their lifetime, the
ramifications of that experience can be long-lasting. Children subjected to
years of anguish and suffering are almost certain to display much more severe
difficulties with their self-esteem, as one would expect. Some of the impacts
are obvious and are a direct consequence of the bullying, while other effects
can become more insidious and are the product of the agony's additional effects.
Learning how bullying can impair a child's sense of self-worth can help
mitigate some of the lengthy results of the behavior. Discovering the various
repercussions of bullying can also urge more parents to take an active role in
the fight against it.
The connection between steadily
increasing BMI and interpersonal phobia, anxiety, suicidal tendencies, and
consciousness in teenagers was facilitated by brutalizing direct and indirect
bullying and orchestrating passive bullying(Yen et
al., 2014). Additionally, the connection between enhanced BMI and socially
irrational fear was also influenced by bullying. When designing preventative
and integrated sustainability for teenagers with an elevated BMI, it is
necessary to consider both the victims and the culprits of passive bullying.
Social
Anxiety
Gaining self-identity can be challenging
for students, whether they are the target of bullying or the bully themselves.
Both being tormented and bullying others produces social anxiety, which can
lead to further issues in the long run. Teenagers typically engage in
antisocial behavior if they perceive that they are being treated poorly due to
negative assessments they have received(Islam et
al., 2022). According to the findings of certain studies, the most
important element that might lead to antisocial behaviors like bullying is the
study of the relationship that exists between parents and their children.
Bullies frequently describe having a bad bond with their parents and a lack of
personal emotional support.
Conclusion
Being on either side of the bullying
dynamic can significantly impact one's mental health. The cycle of bullying and
being bullied is an issue that needs to be corrected immediately(Lee & Shin, 2021). Causing someone else to
suffer in either a physical or mental capacity can have devastating
repercussions in the long run. As a result of having a lower than average sense
of self-worth, teens are more likely to make an effort to alter their
appearance, which candecrease or increase BMI. The victim can become
depressed, leading to self-harm or even suicide. Because they experience social
anxiety from being tormented and don't comprehend how to engage with others healthily,
victims of bullying can even turn to bullying others as a means of attempting
to reconquer their own life.
