Shakira Might Be Facing 8 Years In Spanish Prison
Today in crime, a prosecutor in Spain has asked for Shakira—yes, that Shakira—to be sent to prison for eight years for alleged tax fraud, according to Reuters. The prosecution has accused Shakira of failing to pay taxes in Spain from 2012 to 2014. Shakira says she didn’t live in Spain during that time. The prosecution says that she did, and that she now owes over 14 million euros to the Spanish government. Okay, wow.
According to the prosecution document cited by Reuters, Shakira bought a home in Barcelona in 2012, which was a family home for herself, her son, and her now ex-partner. The singer’s representatives told Reuters that she “is fully confident of her innocence.” Reuters also reports that Shakira’s team rejected a settlement offer earlier this week. Earlier, Page Six reported that, according to the Colombian singer’s public relations firm, she already paid her outstanding tax debt and now owes the Spanish government nada.

As of now, a date for the trial has not been set. I know nobody is above the law and all, but eight years feels excessive. But hey, I’m not an expert in Spanish tax law or anything, so what do I know.
Meanwhile, Shakira is fresh from a split with her longtime partner and Spanish soccer star, Gerard Piqué, according to Page Six. The couple share two sons, Milan and Sasha, who are just having the worst summer break ever.

Shakira Is Going To Trial Over A $15 Million Tax Bill Reportedly Owed To Spanish Government
Shakira is taking a big gamble and going to trial over an alleged 14.5 million-euro ($15 million) tax bill owed to the Spanish government. The 45-year-old musician refused to take the plea offered to her by prosecutors, so the case is now headed to court.
Her PR firm Llorente y Cuenca said in a statement, via Page Six, that Shakira “trusts her innocence and chooses to leave the issue in the hands of the law.” Spanish prosecutors are arguing that between 2012 and 2014 she failed to pay her hefty tax bill after buying a home in Barcelona. However, Shakira’s representatives insist that she wasn’t living in the country during that time period and swear that her debts are all paid to the Spanish Tax Agency. She’s already paid 17.2 million euros ($17.5 million), so Spain is looking for the missing 14.5 million euros they claim she owes.

While no trial date has been set yet, the prosecutors are asking for an eight-year prison sentence and a fine of up to 23 million euros ($23.5 million) if she’s found guilty. It’s unclear what the plea deal would have looked like, but the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer’s reps are stating the case is “a total violation of her rights.” Shakira and the prosecutors have been arguing about this tax bill since 2018, so the upcoming trial should generate quite a bit of attention.

The news also comes on the heels of her split from longtime partner, Barcelona soccer star Gerard Piqué, after 11 years together. The athlete is not involved Shakira’s court case, but they are busy amicably co-parenting their two sons Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7.

A Spanish prosecutor asked for Shakira to be jailed for more than eight years for tax fraud, El País reported.
She is accused of failing to pay tax in Spain, though she says she doesn't live there.
The prosecutor also said she should pay a fine of $23.51 million, the report said.
Spanish prosecutors have recommended that the singer Shakira be imprisoned for eight years and two months for tax fraud, the Spanish newspaper El País reported.
They also said she should pay a fine of $23.51 million (23.7 million euros), El País reported.
Spanish prosecutors first filed charges against Shakira in 2018, saying she failed to pay $16.3 million (14.5 million euro) in tax there.
Prosecutors said Shakira was spending so much time in Spain — as she was dating the Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué — that she owed the country tax, El País reported.
Shakira and Piqué announced their separation after 11 years last month.
Shakira rejected a plea deal with Spanish prosecutors earlier this week and opted to take the case to trial.
The "Hips Don't Lie" singer's publicists said in a statement that she "trusts her innocence and chooses to leave the issue in the hands of the law," according to Billboard.
Shakira said since the investigation started she had been legally residing in the Bahamas, El País reported. She said she was not living in Spain, Reuters reported.
